The Exorcism of Emily Budd was originally a public installation in October 2018 in Salem, NY. The cast-iron exorcism kit includes 12 beeswax candles, rosary, bible, salt, holy water, crucifix, garlic necklace and chalice with my arm cast in beeswax. Other people are needed to perform an exorcism and I was joined by those who gathered around my candles as I read from my piece, Caesura. I was lucky enough to take over the abandoned Salem Railroad Station and borrow some gothic walnut furniture pieces from the Georgi estate. The work is about finding sanctuary through escape, and exorcising one’s internalized inhibitions.
