Described locally as Nevada’s “Atlantis,” the town of St. Thomas was drowned by Lake Mead when the Hoover Dam was built on the Colorado River in the 1930s. Ruins of the town have re-emerged several times since then, now lying entirely exposed due to droughts caused by climate change and colonial impacts. Seeking transformation after abandonment through the lens of expanded cruising culture and queer renewal, I build on Smithson’s references to Time and explore a form of freedom gifted by the possibilities of entropy.
